St. Martinville is nestled amid broad cane fields bordering the Atchafalaya Basin in Southwest Louisiana. This sleepy Bayou Teche town was home to Evangeline, the slighted lover made famous in Longfellow's poem. Our rich heritage is rooted in the Old World traditions of Acadians, French, Spanish, Creoles and Indians who plied  our slow winding waterways throughout the 17th, 18th & 19th centuries. Back then, St. Martinville bustled with commerce from its rich agrarian resources and culture.    The arts thrived in Le Petit Paris as the town came to be known. The Duchamp Opera House was built in the 1830's. Until the fin de siecle, it was the town's centerpiece, visited by traveling dance troupes, opera from New Orleans and local theater productions.    In the early 20th century, the Bienvenu family acquired the building and established Bienvenu Brothers, Leaders of Fashion. This department store served the community for many years. In 1998, the descendants of the Bienvenu family gifted the structure to the City of St. Martinville prompting an ambitious renaissance for this historic building and the arts.    Today, the Duchamp Opera House has come full circle. St. Martinville's proud home for the arts supports: antiques & mercantile, regional artists, jewelry, gift ware art, woodwork crafts and The Evangeline Players.
